Oral Medicine is the discipline of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of medically complex patients – including the diagnosis and management of medical conditions that affect the oral and maxillofacial region.

Our specialists are experts in the diagnosis and management of patients with:

  • Oral ulcers
  • Infectious diseases of the oral cavity (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
  • Autoimmune and immune-mediated conditions affecting the oral mucosa, including lichen planus, pemphigus vulgaris, and mucous membrane pemphigoid
  • Precancerous oral mucosal lesions
  • Dry mouth and salivary gland disorders, including Sjogren syndrome
  • Oral manifestations of systemic disease, such as systemic lupus erythematosus and Crohn disease
  • Oral complications from cancer treatment, such as mucositis, graft-versus-host disease, and jaw osteonecrosis
  • Chemosensory and neurologic impairment of the oral and maxillofacial complex, including taste disturbance, burning mouth syndrome, and trigeminal neuralgia
